On April 17, 2014 at approximately 2:00 pm, California Highway Patrol Telecommunications Center received a call from a witness reporting a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving.
The vehicle, a red 2005 Nissan Pathfinder, was traveling westbound on I-80 from Horseshoe Bar Road using the #1, #2, and #3 lanes. The Pathfinder continued westbound on I-80 traveling into Sacramento County. Just west of Madison Avenue, the Pathfinder began to veer to the right, crossing all lanes, traveling across the right shoulder and down an embankment where it struck several trees causing major damage to its left side. The female driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A male child was sitting in the left rear of the vehicle in a child restraint system; however, due to the force of the impact, he died from his injuries. A female child was sitting in the right rear and she was transported to UC Davis Medical Center with serious injuries.
No other vehicles were involved in this collision. It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs is a contributing factor is this collision, pending a toxicology report. The identity of all parties involved is not being released, pending notification of next of kin.
