Recently, we decided to evaluate our Comcast and AT&T services due to the combination of poor customer service and pricing issues.
We began exploring our options and realized a large monthly cost savings without much discernable impact on our digital habits.
First Up: Internet and Television
Comcast bundled our TV service with our Internet and they wouldn’t offer us a better price if we cancelled TV service. Outside of Netflix and the web, television doesn’t offer our family much value, so we were pinned to Comcast’s overpriced Internet service along with basic cable that included a very poor picture quality. It made the small amount of time viewing TV a pixelated nuisance on our hi-def television.
Solution: Surewest (now CCI) + Digital TV Antenna
A 2 year deal for about $20 month gave us high speed Internet at a savings of approximately $45 month or $1,100 over 2 years. Simple!
Bye Bye Cable TV!
For television, we decided on the purchase of a digital antenna (around $50) to grab signals over the air. At a monthly cost of $0 and better picture quality than compressed signals over cable it is a perfect fit for us. Netflix and the Internet fill out the rest of our basic needs.

Next Up: Phone Service
AT&T service and customer support has been nothing short of a migraine (painful details here), so after saving big dumping Comcast, we aimed our sights at AT&T and our approxiamtely $200 month phone service.
Our AT&T service was for 3 smart phones and 1 regular old fashioned cell phone. Each smartphone had a paltry 200MB of data in our plan. We needed an additional phone and upgrade for a total of 5 smartphones.
T-Mobile’s recent promotion to pay early termination fees caught our attention. After a visit their Roseville store on Pleasant Grove, we quickly discovered that 5 smartphones along with a 1,000% increase in data to 2 GB per person and unlimited music streaming (not counted against data cap) would be less expensive than AT&T with only 3 smartphones. Included Wi-Fi Calling sealed the deal as we live in a neighborhood where all carriers seem to have very weak signals.(iPhones wi-fi calling is expected in iOS 8) Our AT&T service required an indoor cell tower connected to our router to function. (Easy Switch!)
Depending on your needs and habits, a little time and effort may save you a nice chunk of change on your bills. We were able to shave almost half off our monthly bills without any dramatic change in habits. Your mileage may vary. We’ve snagged our savings and enjoyed a great vacation!
