On April 19, 2008, at 1:40 p.m., a 62-year-old inmate, who was housed on the 8th floor of the Sacramento County Main Jail, climbed over the safety rail and jumped from the upper tier of his housing unit in an apparent attempt to commit suicide. Deputies immediately responded to where the inmate had landed and rendered first aid until the jails medical staff arrived a short-time later. Paramedics transported the inmate to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:23 p.m.
The inmate was out of his cell to participate in a social visit. He was facing multiple felony counts and had been incarcerated at the Main Jail since April 17, 2008. A thorough death investigation will be conducted pursuant to departmental policy. The inmates identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroners Office.
