A man who called 9-1-1 to report that his uncle had been shot last Sunday afternoon has been arrested for the victim’s murder. Jerry King, 31, was taken into custody shortly before 6:30 p.m. today by detectives from the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau. King will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on a charge of murder.
Shortly before 4:30 p.m. on December 9, 2012, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in the 13000 block of Purvis Road in Herald. A male caller, later identified as King, stated that someone had been shot in the driveway of the home. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a fifty year-old man, who had suffered a gunshot wound to his chest, lying in the driveway outside the home. The victim was pronounced deceased by paramedics who arrived at the scene.
The caller, a resident of the home, initially stated that while inside the residence, he heard a gunshot from outside. He then looked out and saw the victim, his uncle who was visiting from out of town, lying motionless in the driveway. No suspect information was given, and there were no witnesses to the incident.
Homicide detectives worked into the night and the next day conducting follow-up investigation at the scene. The following afternoon, after an extensive search of the property, a Sheriff’s K9 unit located a firearm hidden amongst some brush and plant matter in the rear portion of the residence. Detectives believe that it is the firearm used in the commission of this crime. Additional investigation discovered that there was a strained family relationship between the victim and the suspect in this case. It is believed that the nature of the relationship between the two was the catalyst and motive for the crime being committed.
The identity of the victim in this case will officially be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s office. A booking photograph of the suspect, King, will be released when it is available.
