On April 16, 2013, at approximately 9:15 p.m., a 54 year old female from Carmichael was driving a 2001 red Ford Mustang on westbound Fair Oaks Boulevard east of Marshall Avenue. She was traveling in the #1 lane at approximately 40 mph when pedestrian, Veniamin Pekun, began to walk across the roadway directly in front of the Ford. The Ford struck Pekun, causing his to be thrown onto the roadway and coming to rest in the #1 lane of eastbound Fair Oaks Boulevard. A second car driven by a 56 year old male from Fair Oaks was unable to avoid Pekun and struck his body in the #1 lane. Pekun, a 39 year old from Sacramento, died from his injuries at the scene.
Pekun was not crossing in a crosswalk. It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs is a contributing factor in this collision pending a toxicology report. This collision is still under investigation.
