Pedestrian Killed in Hit and Run: Driver Arrested on Felony Charge

On Sunday, June 15, 2014, at approximately 10:37 p.m., a 22 year old male pedestrian from Sacramento, was walking northbound on Marconi Ave west of Walnut Ave in the middle of the roadway. The pedestrian was wearing a black trench coat during hours of darkness, outside of a crosswalk, in a section of the roadway that had no street lights.

At that time, Eric Nelson, a 24 year old Hispanic male from Vacaville, was driving a white 1998 Chevrolet Astro Van w/b on Marconi Ave west of Walnut Ave in the #2 lane at 40 mph approaching the pedestrian’s location. The pedestrian stepped in front of the Chevrolet just as it came upon the pedestrian’s location. Nelson swerved right but was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian.

After the collision Nelson fled the scene traveling westbound on Marconi Ave west of Walnut Ave. The pedestrian was immediately transported to Mercy San Juan Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

On June 17th, in the late afternoon, Eric Nelson turned himself in to the North Sacramento CHP office where he was subsequently arrested for 20001(B)(2)VC – Felony hit and run causing death. Nelson was transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail and booked into custody without further incident.
