At approximately 2:15am, the Sacramento Sheriff’s Communications Center began receiving multiple calls reporting citizens hearing gunshots in area of 4000 Antelope Road.
As Deputies were responding to the area, additional calls came in reporting a man armed with a gun walking in the area of North Loop Boulevard, near Antelope Road. Once the Deputies arrived and began searching the area, they encountered a male in his late 20’s walking on Don Julio Boulevard, just north of Antelope Road, carrying an assault rifle.
Deputies confronted the male who refused their directives to drop the weapon. The subject then pulled a second weapon, a handgun, from his clothing and pointed it at the officers. Fearing for their safety and the safety of the public, Deputies shot the male. He was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
It is unknown the motive or mindset of the armed male. No officers or members of the community were injured during this incident. The suspect’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, once next of kin has been notified.
The investigation into the incident will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, which is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the Sheriff’s Department’s jurisdiction.
In accordance with the Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures, the two deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. One deputy is a nine year veteran of the Department, the other a thirteen year veteran of the Department. Both are currently assigned to Field and Investigative Services.
