Update: The suspect in yesterdays incident in Galt is Humphrey GASCON, 30 years old.
At approximately 11:36 a.m. today, the Sheriff’s Communications center received an emergency assist call from the city of Galt regarding an officer-involved shooting. The incident, which occurred near ‘F Street and Third Street, claimed the life of one police officer and the suspect, who both died of gunshot wounds.
Just after 11:20 a.m., Galt police officers responded to the call of a burglary that had occurred in the 200 block of F Street. While on location at the scene and during preliminary investigation, one of the responding officers contacted a male adult walking nearby close to some railroad tracks, in regards to the burglary.
During the contact with the subject, the officer became involved in a physical struggle with him. Other officers responded to his location to assist. During the confrontation, the male subject produced a handgun and fired at the officer, striking him. A second officer arrived at the scene just afterwards and observed the suspect leaving the scene. The suspect fired an unknown number of shots at that officer, before turning the gun on himself.
The officer was transported to a hospital; unfortunately, he died as a result of his injury. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The officer was 35 years old, and a 3 1/2 year veteran of the Galt Police Department, where he was assigned as a canine officer.
The name of the suspect in this case will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, after notification has been made to his next of kin. Investigation into this incident will be handled by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
