On July 25, 2010, at 6:52 a.m., the Sacramento County Sheriffs Departments Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from a man who told the call taker he had interrupted a burglary in-progress and that the suspect was armed with a both a knife and a pump action gun. When deputies arrived at the home in the 8500 block of Greenback lane, the caller told the deputies the suspect had ducked into the bushes near Greenback Lane and Kenneth Avenue and that the suspect was still armed with the gun and knife. Deputies soon located the bushes where the suspect was hiding and called for him to drop his weapons and come out of the bushes. The suspect refused and pointed the gun at the deputies. Feeling they were in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm, both deputies fired multiple shots from their handguns at the suspect. The suspect was not struck by the gunfire. However, he did surrender and was taken into custody without further incident. Deputies recovered the suspects knife and gun, which they discovered was a bb/pellet gun. In accordance with the Sacramento County Sheriffs Departments policies and procedures the female deputies involved in this shooting, a 44-year-old/12-year department veteran, and a 41-year-old/11-year-veteran will be placed on paid administrative leave. The circumstances surrounding the shooting will be investigated by the Sacramento Sheriffs Departments Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Unit, and the Sacramento County District Attorneys Office. The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Pinta Viteazu, will be interviewed by detectives and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges including assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
