On July 24, 2010, at 12:04 a.m., Sacramento County Sheriffs deputies responded to the report of a shooting at a home in the 6200 block of Welty Way. When deputies arrived they found a 12-year-old male lying in the bathroom and suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper chest. He was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
Investigators quickly learned the victim was shot by his 16-year-old brother who was handling a handgun when it accidentally discharged. The boys mother was home at the time of the shooting. The 16-year-old was taken into custody and booked into Juvenile Hall on the charge of discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. The investigation is ongoing as detectives try to determine how the suspect came to possess the handgun. The detectives will forward their completed report to the Sacramento County District Attorneys office who will determine what, if any, additional charges may be filed.
