On July 27, 2010, at 1:34 p.m., Sacramento County Sheriffs Department deputies responded to the report of gunshots and a vehicle collision at the intersection of 37th Street and 41st Avenue. When deputies arrived, they found two vehicles, a Pontiac Bonneville and a brown Chevrolet Tahoe, had collided head-on. Two other parked vehicles were struck by the cars. Witnesses told deputies the Pontiac and a second SUV, which fled the scene, had been involved in a gun battle which caused the collision. Investigators do not believe the driver of brown Tahoe was involved in the shooting. Witnesses also said at least three unidentified males fled from the Pontiac after the collision. The 31-year-old driver of the Tahoe and the 19-year-old driver of the Pontiac were taken to local hospitals for treatment of their non-life threatening injuries caused by the collision. Investigators do not believe anyone was struck by the gunfire. A subject believed to have been a passenger in the Pontiac, 19-year-old Arthur Scherr, was detained a short distance away by United States Marshals deputies who had been in the area at the time of the shooting. Scherr will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on his two active warrants. Shortly after the shooting, a California Highway Patrol officer located a silver SUV at a convenience store on 47th Avenue east of Martin Luther King Boulevard. However, witnesses were unable to identify either the driver, or passenger, as suspects involved in the shooting. Deputies recovered a handgun inside the Pontiac and in the backyard of a nearby home. A Sacramento Police Department K9 officer, whose canine partner is specially trained by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, also located a handgun on southbound Highway 99 near the scene. Detectives have not established a motive for this shooting, nor have they identified all of the suspects who fled from the scene of the vehicle collision. Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to call Sheriffs detectives at (916) 874-5115, or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP.
