Shootout in South Sacramento
At approximately 1:39 p.m. today, Sheriff's deputies responded to calls regarding shots fired at a business strip mall in the 6500 block of Savings Place. Information in the calls stated that multiple subjects were fighting in the parking lot, and that an exchange of gunfire had erupted between two groups of people.
Upon their arrival, deputies located a pool of blood in the parking lot, as well as broken glass. In addition, approximately thirty-two shell casings of different caliber were scattered throughout the parking lot. Deputies began to canvass the businesses for victims and witnesses, and crime scene investigators arrived to process the scene.
At about 2:00 p.m., the Sheriff's communications center received information that two males with gunshot wounds had arrived at a local hospital. Detectives responded to the hospital and discovered a twenty year-old male with a gunshot wound to his head, and a twenty-one year-old male who had been shot in the leg. Both victims were expected to survive their injuries. It is unknown at this time whether or not the victims exchanged gunfire with other subjects, in addition to being shot themselves.
Based on the circumstances of this shooting, detectives believe there is a high likelihood that it was gang-related. The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at (916) 874-5115.
