Shotgun Wielding Fugitive Surrenders in Carmichael
A search in Carmichael for an out-of-state fugitive ended peacefully yesterday, when the suspect was taken into custody shortly before 2:30 p.m. The fugitive, whose name is not yet being released, had been sought by U.S. Marshals for charges out of Washington related to a vehicular hit-and-run, and weapons possession.
Just before 11:30 a.m. today, Sheriff's deputies were called to assist U.S. deputy marshals at the Westwood Apartments in the 2800 block of Westwood Lane in Carmichael. They were attempting to arrest the aforementioned fugitive at the location, when he ran from them and into an apartment that he had just walked out of. A woman who exited the apartment with the suspect was detained immediately, as the marshals proceeded to establish perimeter containment around the target residence.
Moments later, the suspect broke out one of the apartment windows from the inside, and jumped onto the balcony while holding a shotgun. As one of the marshals ordered him to stop, the suspect then jumped from the balcony and fled to that of another apartment, leaving the shotgun behind. He then forced entry into that apartment by breaking a window and going inside.
Sheriff's patrol deputies descended upon the scene, along with members of the K9 unit, Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT) and the Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT). A perimeter was established around the apartment complex, as residents were directed to shelter in place. Sheriff's personnel determined that the suspect was likely hiding in the apartment, and that no other occupants were inside.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., chemical agents were deployed into the target apartment in an effort to flush the suspect out. After approximately two minutes, he came out of the apartment and surrendered to deputies without any further resistance. He was immediately taken into custody, and evaluated by paramedics for sharp force trauma, which he is believed to have sustained while going through the broken windows.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. Once medically cleared and deemed fit for incarceration, he will be transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail to await extradition proceeding by the U.S. Marshals' office. The suspect's name and photograph will be released once he has been booked into jail.
