On December 12, 2012, a 66 year-old Vu Van Ha of Sacramento died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The man had been in custody since December 6, 2012, when he was booked into the jail for charges including felony evasion of a peace officer, hit and run, assault with a deadly weapon and reckless driving.

Earlier on the morning of December 12, shortly before 4:00 a.m., a deputy went to the victim's cell to check on him. When the deputy arrived at the cell, he observed the victim hanging with a piece of cloth around his neck. The deputy immediately entered the cell and removed the cloth. Medical staff inside the facility was notified and, along with the deputy, attempted to perform life-saving measures on the victim. These efforts were conducted until the arrival of emergency medical personnel from outside the facility, who continued to perform CPR on the victim. Unfortunately, the efforts failed and the inmate was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff's Department will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner's Office has identified the deceased as Vu Van Ha of Sacramento.
