Roommate Guilty in Bludgeoning and Stabbing Death

District Attorney Jan Scully announced that Anthony Bettanini pled guilty to the second degree murder of his roommate William Goldsbury.

On August 23, 2010, Sacramento police officers arrived at an apartment on Norwood Avenue. Bettanini stated that he found his roommate dead when he returned home. Officers found the victim bludgeoned and stabbed to death on his bedroom floor. They also found two knives that someone attempted to flush down the apartment toilet.

Due to the blood staining on Bettanini's clothes, he was detained and subsequently interviewed. Initially, he continued to maintain that he only discovered his roommate and made physical contact to determine his condition. During his interview, he made odd and paranoid statements reflecting that he seemingly suffered from a mental disorder. Ultimately, Bettanini admitted attacking the victim over a dispute.

Bettanini faces a potential maximum sentence of 15 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for February 22, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. in Department 63 of the Sacramento Superior Court.
