Man Found Dead in Cell following Minor Charge
On January 28, 2013, a 34 year-old inmate died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The man was taken into custody earlier in the day, when he was booked into the jail for a charge of public intoxication.
Shortly before noon yesterday, a deputy conducted a visual inspection of the holding cell that the victim was in. When the deputy arrived at the cell, he observed the victim hanging with a piece of clothing around his neck. It appeared that the victim fashioned a piece of clothing into a ligature around his neck. Deputies immediately entered the cell and removed the item of clothing. Medical staff inside the facility was notified and, along with custody staff, attempted to perform life-saving measures on the victim. These efforts were conducted until the arrival of emergency medical personnel from outside the facility, who transported the victim to a local hospital. Ultimately, efforts to revive the victim failed and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Sheriff's Department will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner's Office will release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.
