Felon Convicted in 2011 Shooting Death
District Attorney Jan Scully announced recently that Richard Carter was convicted by jury of second degree murder in the shooting death of Kevin Burks on October 11, 2011. He was also convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. A court trial on his "strike" prior allegation is pending.
Sentencing is set for March 7, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. before the Honorable Timothy Frawley. Carter is facing a sentence of 80 years to life in prison if the "strike" prior allegation is found to be true or 40 years to life in prison if the allegation is found not to be true.
Carter was 17 years old at the time of the crime and was charged and convicted as an adult.
