Elderly Couple Suffer Major Injuries in Hit and Run
On August 24, 2013, at approximately 3:45 p.m., Joe Mikles, a 70 year old from Meadow Vista, and his passenger Mary (wife), were riding on a 2001 Harley Davidson soft tail motorcycle on eastbound I-80 just east of Norwood Avenue.
The motorcycle was traveling in the #2 lane at approximately 60-65 mph. A silver or gray vehicle was approaching the motorcycle from behind and struck the rear of the motorcycle, ejecting both the riders. After striking the rear of the motorcycle, the driver failed to stop at the scene and continued driving their vehicle on eastbound I-80. Both riders were transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Hospital with major injuries but not life threatening. Both were wearing helmets at the time of the collision.
The hit and run vehicle is described as a silver or gray Nissan that should have front bumper and grill damage. It will be missing its front Nissan emblem and may have hood damage. The vehicle was reported to have been driven recklessly just prior to the traffic collision.
