Holiday Activities at Sacramento Museums

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- In addition to its fascinating Gold Rush past, the Sacramento area is rich with an amazing array of state-of-the-art museums and historic sites that offer visitors the chance to explore California's fine art, history, science, and wildlife treasures all year long.  In December, most of the 30 members of Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) are offering special holiday-related events and activities, a sampling of which follows:

Handmade in CA Gift Workshop at The California Museum -- December 7 & 14
Get a jump start on the holidays with this three-hour workshop -- presented in partnership with Re-Create Eco Art -- for kids ages 7 to 12 to make handmade holiday presents from recycled materials. While parents handle the hustle and bustle of the holidays, children will be making California-themed gifts, such as an ornament made from wine corks, an art piece depicting an iconic state scene and more. Gingerbread House Display at the Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum -- Thru December 21
Come and see dozens of sweet confections on display at the 26th Annual Gingerbread Holiday at the Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum! There will be houses, mansions, shacks and other gingerbread structures created by school children, families, bakery academy students and adults. Entries are made of spicy gingerbread, cookies, candies and imagination and guests can vote for their favorite entry! For more, visit www.scoe.net/oldsacschoolhouse

A Simple Emigrant Christmas & Candlelight Tours at Sutter's Fort -- December 14
Sutter's Fort has two interactive and fun "Hands on History" events scheduled on one very special day!  During the day, Fort visitors will step back in time to holidays past with festive, hands-on activities such as dipping candles, making cornhusk dolls and crafting holiday ornaments as part of "A Simple Emigrant Christmas" activities.  When darkness falls, guests will see Sutter's Fort in a new light -- by candlelight!  Guests will enjoy intriguing glimpses into the private lives of those who uprooted their families for a better life in early California. Sound of Music Sing-Along at the Crocker Art Museum -- December 26
