Man Killed Running Across Freeway
On December 11, 2013 at approximately 4:24 a.m. a 36 year old male from Oakland, was driving a white 1993 Toyota Camry on eastbound I-80 west of Madison Avenue at an unknown speed.
The Toyota struck the rear of a big rig which caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle. His vehicle traveled into the center divider where it struck a concrete wall. The driver exited his vehicle and began to travel across the freeway to the right shoulder. As he was crossing the lanes, a white 2007 Volvo XC90 was approaching in the #3 lane and the right mirror struck him. A second vehicle, a white 2007 Volkswagon Jetta, traveling in the #6 or #7 lane also struck him. Two additional vehicles struck the pedestrian and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The 32 year old female driver of the Volkswagon was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Hospital with minor injuries. There were no other injuries in this collision.
The identity of the driver is not being released, pending notification of next of kin. It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs is a contributing factor in this collision, pending a toxicology report. This collision is still under investigation.
