Bike Month Launch at Fremont Park
This is the tenth year that volunteers, public agencies, businesses, and bicycling enthusiasts will partner to promote bicycling for all types of trips in the hopes of logging Two Million Miles as a region.
Residents can participate by pledging miles at MayisBikeMonth.com and logging their bicycle trips to work, school, shopping, dining or for recreation. Participants can challenge friends to a mileage contest on Facebook or by email.
Caltrans is a regular Bike Month sponsor and annually is one of the most active employers during Bike Month. "Last May, Caltrans employees logged nearly 60,000 miles, and we plan on doing our part to reach the Sacramento region's two million mile goal," said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. "Caltrans and our local partners are committed to making our communities more livable by investing about $360 million toward bicycling and other active transportation projects."
In addition to the health benefits of bicycling, residents can also pedal to avoid traffic congestion from construction projects like Fix50 (www.Fix50.com), beat rising gas prices, help reduce air pollution and enjoy the beautiful May weather.
On Thursday, May 8, the region celebrates Bike Month with a BikeFest at the State Capitol. In addition to prizes and music, the Sacramento BikeFest will feature booths by bike shops and bike groups, as well commute information.
The following Thursday, May 15, the region celebrates Bike to Work Day with events taking place throughout the region.
Throughout the month, there will be weekly prize drawings; individual, group and employer challenges; rallies; awards; safety clinics and organized rides.
