Sacramento The Democratic Party of Sacramento County unanimously passed a resolution urging the Sacramento City Unified School District to not renew the lease of Sacramento Charter High School and to relocate the charter school to a building more appropriate for its size. While Sacramento Charter has noble goals, it is not a comprehensive public school that will serve the entire community. Sacramento Charter High School has suffered from declining enrollment since it was created. In 2009-2010, Sacramento Charter High School has an in-district enrollment of only 699 students, one quarter the number that the building was built to serve. The closure of Sacramento High School has left a glaring gap in Sacramentos public schools, leaving students in Oak Park, East Sacramento, Midtown, Downtown, College Greens, Riverpark and Glenbrook without a public high school in their communities. These students are forced to travel across the city to other schools, leaving those schools overcrowded and all public school students at a tremendous disadvantage. The District is doing a disservice to its students and failing to meet its obligations to spend taxpayer resources in an effective, cost-efficient manner. Sacramento Charter should be able to coexist with a public high school, either sharing the building or moving it to a facility more appropriate for its size, said Devin Lavelle, Democratic Party of Sacramento County spokesman. The District has a responsibility to educate every child, in every community, to ensure equity, access and achievement for every student by name.
